It all started at 6 a.m. on the morning of April 26. That’s when the first shoppers lined up outside the new Nordstrom Rack in Kimco’s West Farms shopping center in Farmington, Conn., for a grand opening celebration that could have been heard from blocks away. We were there with our cameras to capture the event.

A DJ pumped dance music throughout the packed parking lot as hundreds of style hunters lined the full store-front length of the shopping center. But they wanted more than just first dibs on the deals inside the first Nordstrom Rack in Connecticut.

Shoppers were after the opening day contests and prizes. The biggest attraction was the Race Through the Rack, a sweepstakes for one customer to win a 90-second, $2,000 shopping spree right before the store opens at 9 a.m.

Sean Keating of West Hartford, Conn., stole the show when his name was drawn. With both hands gripping the signature Race Through the Rack shopping cart, he took off through the men’s department, piling as many shirts, pants, belts, and ties as he could into the cart.

Outside, the bass was booming and excitement was building. Inside, Nordstrom Rack employees cheered on the countdown. And then, the clock struck nine. The front doors swung open and shoppers flowed inside the 35,000-square-foot store.

It wasn’t long before they found the 20 golden hangers hidden throughout the clothes racks. Each hanger was redeemable for $100 to spend inside the store. To help shoppers out, Nordstrom Rack tweeted clues on its Twitter, @Farmington_Rack. The first 1,000 customers who made a purchase at the new Nordstrom Rack also received a complimentary Nordstrom Rack tote.

It was a morning of fun, fashion, and fêting as shoppers officially began enjoying the new Nordstrom Rack in the Farmington neighborhood. See more of the happenings in our photo slide show:
