FLEXIBILITY IS KEY: MEADOWBROOK COMMONS WELCOMES NEW TARGET CONCEPT
Target has opened more than 25 flexible format stores since 2012. Although smaller by square footage, these stores still offer everything that frequent Target shoppers have come to know and love. Emphasizing a locally-relevant experience, flexible Targets’ unique store designs contain a curated product assortment and one-of-a-kind features — all geared towards the surrounding market’s demographics.
You may recall that we announced a Target flexible format store coming to our Meadowbrook Commons shopping center in Freeport, New York earlier this year. For local Target shoppers, the store’s October 23 grand opening was truly a celebration, as they now have a Target close by. At 46,753 square feet (Target’s biggest flex-format location), the store includes extensive apparel and home collections, a grocery section with fresh produce, select toys, and sporting goods. It also offers services like Target Mobile and Order Pickup — Target’s order pickup service that allows customers to make purchases online and pick them up in store.
The grand opening event was complete with tote and Bullseye plush toy giveaways for the Target aficionado in all of us. See what Whitney, Target Freeport’s manager, and shoppers at the center had to say about the new store opening:
Beyond its flexible format concept, Target has no shortage of fresh retail ideas — after all, the company operates an innovation lab in San Francisco. Target took its forward-thinking to another level when it revealed last year that it would team up with Techstars to create Target + Techstars — a retail accelerator program that offers investment capital and mentor support from Target executives to 11 tech startups focused on bringing new experiences and solutions to retail.
This past September, the program culminated with the startups pitching their business ideas to venture capitalists and retail and tech influencers. Examples included technology that helps customers use voice search to find products and a mobile app that lets hourly workers easily swap shifts, view schedules, and message one another.
We look forward to seeing what other retail innovations emerge from Target in 2017. If you’re curious if a flexible format Target is coming to a town near you, take a look at the retailer’s list of upcoming store openings here.
