LOCAL BUSINESSES OPEN ARMS TO DOGS IN NEED THIS VALENTINE’S DAY
CAMERA? A Camp Bow Wow pup investigates
Dogs in Central Maryland are getting extra lovin’ this Valentine’s Day at Kimco’s Enchanted Forest shopping center in Ellicott City. The center is hosting the 5th annual Cupids and Canines Adopt-a-Thon on Saturday, Feb. 9. It’s a Valentine’s-Day-themed event to raise awareness for dogs in need of homes and to adopt as many four-legged friends as possible throughout the day.
The adopt-a-thon is organized by Camp Bow Wow, a doggy day and overnight camp, and sponsored by the Petco Foundation, which helps animal welfare organizations find lifelong, loving homes for millions of orphaned pets every year.
Working with Camp Bow Wow and the Petco Foundation for this event has been a natural fit. Camp Bow Wow, a national franchise, has a Columbia, Md., location just a few miles southwest of our shopping center. The location’s co-owner, Eric Neumann, told us he was looking for a large space with a lot of foot traffic to hold the adopt-a-thon, and our center fit the bill.
Petco is one of our tenants at Enchanted Forest center and supporting an organization such as Camp Bow Wow falls right into its wheelhouse.
Many other local businesses have come together to support the event as well. In fact, Eric told us the adopt-a-thon “wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
IT’S A MATCH: An adoption from last year’s Cupids and Canines event
Donations and raffle prizes have been given by the Petco Foundation, artist Sherry Kendall, Jilly’s Bar and Grill (also a tenant in our center), Olive Garden, The Timbers at Troy golf course, National Aquarium, Giant, The Cheesecake Factory, Pub Dog, Massage Envy, Thundershirt, Bark! pet food, Nutro dog food, and DoodyCalls pet waste removal, just to name a pawful.
Proceeds from the event will go to Camp Bow Wow’s Bow Wow Buddies Foundation and other humane organizations. Camp Bow Wow is also donating funds from the event to support Hurricane Sandy relief in New Jersey. All told, Eric expects some 50 dogs to be up for adoption and a couple hundred people to attend this year’s event.

UPDATE 2/21/2013: We talked to Eric to see how the Cupids and Canines event went this year. He had great news to report. Some 500 attendees came out to meet about 50 dogs. Camp Bow Wow received over 25 applications for adoption, bringing these pups one step closer to finding what Camp Bow Wow calls “forever homes.”
More than 20 local and national businesses and 21 rescue organizations also contributed to the event. In addition, over $1,000 was raised for the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation, and over 300 cans and 350 pounds of dog and cat food was collected for a special Hurricane Sandy pet relief drive.
And, space-wise, this year’s Cupids and Canines event was the largest ever, with 4,000 square feet donated by Kimco. We’re excited to hear the great news, Eric. Congratulations on an event well done!
